    1999, Nyno Records

When the world's finest Zydeco guitarist comes to play the blues, you know it's gonna be hot. His history as lead axe for Clifton Chenier, Buckwheat Zydeco and Rocking was preceded by his stint as a session man on Nashville's Excello label, where he pumped out classic soul and R&B licks. Appearing with swamp-blues artists like Lazy Lester and Slim Harpo, Lil' Buck cut his teeth on the blues you'll hear here. His guitar work is original and interesting—enough to have appeared on Paul Simon's Graceland. This disk features his singing and writing and Allen Toussaint's considerable skill as a producer. The cuts run the gamut from the Albert King-like "This Road" to funk on "Buckin' For Your Love" to a zydeco inspired "Blues Into Zydeco." Along with some tasty shuffles and boogies there's the classic guitar instrumental "Sleepwalk." It's a diverse, interesting and good listening outing by a long time back man. It's good enough for you to lay down the legal tender.—Mark Gresser
