LUCY KAPLANSKY CHORDS & LYRICS

THE RED THREAD

Capo II

Intro: (G)(C)(G)(C)

I was (G)only a girl
When I went (C)out on my own
You (G)wrapped me up warm
And (C)just let me go
Now I (Em)live at the far end
Of this (D)long distance line
And I'm (C)just another one
Who's gone and (D)left you behind

Wish we could (G)look at your pictures
All the (C)places you've been
I (G)don't think you will
But you can (C)see them again
'Cause you can (Em)see them through me
The brown (D)eyes I got from you
(C)Now I wish I could give 'em back to (D)you

This (Em)much I can say
This (G)much I can do
When your (C)heart is empty
I'll try to (A)fill it for you
'Cause I'm the (C)girl who learned to (D)love
From watching (G)you (C)(G)(C)

(G)Wish that I could tell you
It'll (C)all be all right
But you (G)never did believe it
Through the (C)trials of your life
(Em)You and I both know
It (D)just isn't true
When (C)so much you love
Has been (D)taken from you

I re(G)member when you told me
If we (C)run out of time
How (G)happy you were
Just to (C)know she'll be mine
When I (Em)wrap her up warm
You'll be (D)right next to me
'Cause they (C)say that the red thread that ties me to you
Ties her to (D)me

This (Em)much I can say
This (G)much I can do
When your (C)heart is empty
I'll try to (A)fill it for you
This (Em)much I can say
This (G)much I can do
When your (C)heart is empty
I'll try to (A)fill it for you
'Cause I'm the (C)girl who learned to (D)love
From watching (G)you (C)
(G)Watching you (C)
(G)Watching you (C)(G)(C)

I HAD SOMETHING

(Em)I had something
It fell from me
Something (C)strong
Like a pounding (G)drum(D)
Like ringing (Em)bells
When I was (C)young
I had (D)something
And it was (Em)gone

(Em)I had something
Made me walk all night
Made me run from (C)home
Made me (G)fight(D)
I had (Em)something
Made me feel a(C)lone
Like an (D)orphan
Waiting for a (Em)home

Every (C)footstep (G)that I (D)take
Completes the (C)circle (D)my life (Em)makes
Every (C)living (G)thing has ties that (D)bind
What I (Am)lost re(C)turns with love and (Em)time

(Em)I heard something
It called to me
And it (C)told me
I was (G)saved(D)
Not by (Em)God
And not by (C)words
Not by (D)any living (Em)thing

(Em)It was the voice that I once knew
Of my (C)daughter or my (G)son(D)
Not yet (Em)born
And not yet (C)known
Another (D)orphan waiting for a (Em)home

Every (C)footstep (G)that I (D)take
Completes the (C)circle (D)my life (Em)makes
Every (C)living (G)thing has ties that (D)bind
What I (Am)lost re(C)turns with love and (Em)time
Every (C)living (G)thing has ties that (D)bind
What I (Am)lost re(C)turns with love and (Em)time

THE ANGELS REJOICED . . . Ira & Charlie Louvin

Capo III

A (D)house, not a home
Was the picture Satan painted
For (G)sweet little sister and (D)me
Our daddy would frown
While mother was prayin'
His heart was so hardened
That (A)he would not be(D)lieve

In anger he'd (D7)swear
His (G)voice cold and (D)loud
His Sundays were spent
Out with the gamblin' (A)crowd
I've (D)never seen my daddy
In(G)side a house of (D)God
For Satan held his hand
Down the (A)path of sin he (D)trod

Not long ago
Our circle was broken
When (G)God called on mother one (D)night
In a voice sweet and low
Her last words were spoken
Asking our daddy
To (A)raise her children (D)right

The angels re(D7)joiced
In (G)Heaven last (D)night
I heard my daddy pray
Dear God, make it (A)right
He was (D)smiling and singing
With (G)tears in his (D)eyes
While mother with the angels
Re(A)joiced last (D)night
While mother with the angels
Re(A)joiced last (G)night (D)

DON'T MIND ME

Capo II

And de(F)railed when I'm with(C)out you
Don't mind (G)me

(C)Don't mind (G)me
If you could love me just a (Am)little it'd be o(Em)kay
'Cause I couldn't (F)leave you any(C)way
Don't mind (G)me

(C)It doesn't (G)matter what you (Am)say
I just (F)like the way you (C)sound
And (G)if you turn a(Am)way
I'll just (F)turn you back a(C)round
(G)Come on baby (Am)please
(Fm)Play your song for (C)me (G)(Am)(F)

(C)Don't blame (G)me
It's just your (Am)burning gravi(Em)ty
That (F)brings me to my (C)knees
In front of (G)you

(C)Don't blame (G)me
But I just wanna (Am)get you on the (Em)ground
Play a (F)little lost and (C)found
Don't blame (G)me

(C)It doesn't (G)matter what you (Am)say
I just (F)like the way you (C)sound
And (G)if you turn a(Am)way
I'll just (F)turn you back a(C)round
(G)Come on baby (Am)please
(Fm)Play your song for (C)me (G)(Am)(F)

(C)(G)(Am)(F)

(G)If you could love me
If you could only love me
I'd (Am)walk across hot (F)coals to you
I'd (Am)stop the rain and (F)wind for you
I'd (G)save all of my (Em)sin for you
For (F)you, (G)for you

(C)It doesn't (G)matter what you (Am)say
I just (F)like the way you (C)sound
And (G)if you turn a(Am)way
I'll just (F)turn you back a(C)round
(G)Come on baby (Am)please
(Fm)Play your song for (C)me
(G)Come on baby (Am)please
(Fm)Play your song for (C)me (G)(Am)(F)

EVERY SINGLE DAY

Intro: (Em)

You were (Em)sitting by yourself
When I (D)came to say hel(C)lo
(Em)Loading up on cigarettes
And (G)drinks before the (C)show

By the (Em)time you hit the stage
You were (D)tearing at the (C)seams
I (Em)could have told you you'd had enough
But (G)you weren't listen(C)ing

CHORUS:
(D)Every single (Em)day
Takes a (G)piece of you a(A)way
(D)Every single (Em)day

(Em)When you grabbed the brass ring
You (D)hit it deep in(C)side
You (Em)didn't know it's not yours to keep
It's just (G)not that kind of (C)ride

You (Em)heard them laughing at you
But it was (D)just a falling (C)star
So you (Em)threw the face you pasted on
At those (G)bodies in the (C)dark

CHORUS

(Em)I can still remember you
When you were (D)back-lit from in(C)side
And (Em)I would stand there next to you
The (G)bridesmaid to the (C)bride

(Em)Later on my radio
Man said (D)envy it's a (C)sin
I (Em)could have told him save his breath
'Cause (G)I'm not listen(C)ing

CHORUS

THE EYES OF MY BEHOLDER . . . Robin Batteau

There's really no acoustic guitar part on Lucy's recording of this song on The Tide, and what's more, when she does it live, she sings it a cappella. So what I've done here is put together sort of a composite transcription primarily based on the original version as performed by Buskin & Batteau. It won't sound 100% true to Lucy's version, but it's close. Yeah, it's got a whole lot of chords, but it's very cool to play.

LAND OF THE LIVING

Capo II

This is Lucy's 9/11 tribute song, from a version she did on Mountain Stage on January 27, 2002. You can hear this version at http://www.yellow-tigerduck.de/downloads. The song was only a few weeks old at that time, and it does seem that she has since revised the chords -- and tweaked the lyrics -- since her CBS Morning News appearance on March 11 is slightly different. I've indicated two verses of those chords at the bottom of this version (the chorus stays the same).

(G)Late afternoon, back in New York town
(Em)Waking up as the wheels touch down
(D/F#)Pick up my guitar and walk away
(C)Wish I was going home to stay

(G)Line of taxis, I wait my turn
(Em)Tar and asphalt, exhaust and fumes
Be(D/F#)side the road on a patch of ground
(C)Taxi drivers are kneeling down

'Neath the (G)concrete sky I watch them pray
While the (Em)people of the world hurry on their way
I (D/F#)think they're praying for us all today
And the (C)stories that fell from the sky that day

CHORUS
(Em)This is the (C)land of the (G)living (D/F#)
(Em)This is the (C)land that's (D/F#)mine
(Em)She still watches (C)over Man(G)hattan (D/F#)
She's still (Em)holding onto that (C)torch for (D/F#)life

Back home (G)fire's still burning, I can see it in the air
(Em)Pictures of faces posted everywhere
They say (D/F#)"Hazel eyes and chestnut hair
(C)Mother of two, missing down there"

I pass the (G)firemen on duty tonight
(Em)Carpets of flowers in candlelight
And (D/F#)"Thank you" in a child's scrawl
(C)Taped to the 3rd Street firehouse wall

There's (G)shadows of the lost on the faces I see
(Em)Brothers and strangers on this island of grief
There's (D/F#)death in the air but there's life on this street
(C)There's life on this street

CHORUS

(G)Got in a taxi, said "Hudson St. please"
He (Em)started the meter and he looked at me
I (D/F#)glanced at his name on the back of the seat
And I (C)looked out the window at the ghost-filled streets

I (G)noticed cuts on his hand and his face
I said (Em)"You're bleeding, are you okay?"
He said "I'm (D/F#)not so good, got beat up today
And I'm (C)not one of them no matter what they say

I'm just (G)worried about my family
My (Em)wife's in the house and she's scared to leave"
(D/F#)And I didn't know what to say
I didn't know what to say
(C)But I said a prayer for him (D/F#)anyway

(Em)This is the (C)land of the (G)living (D/F#)
(Em)This is the (C)land that's (D/F#)mine
(Em)She still watches (C)over Man(G)hattan (D/F#)
She's still (Em)holding onto that (C)torch for (D/F#)life
Holding on for (G)life

And I'll (A)tell you how it all went (D)down

(G)Out with the truckers and the kickers and the cowboy (C)angels
And a (G)good saloon in every single (C)town
And I remembered (D)something that you once (G)told me
And (C)I'll be damned if (D)it did not come (G)true
(C)Twenty thousand (D)roads I went (G)down (G/F#)down (Em)down
And (C)they all led me (D)straight back home to (G)you

Cause I (Bm)headed west to (C)grow up (D)with the (G)country
A(Em)cross those prairies (D)with those waves of (G)grain
And I (Bm)saw my devil and I (C)saw my (D)deep blue (G)sea
And I (C)thought about a calico (D)bonnet from (C)Cheyenne to (D)Tenne(G)see

(G)We flew straight across that (C)river (G)bridge
Last night (D)half past (G)two
Switchman waved his lantern good(C)bye and good (G)day
As (A)we went rolling (D)through
(G)Billboards and truckstops passed by the grievous (C)angel
And (G)now I know just (D)what I have to (G)do

And the (Bm)man on the radio (C)won't leave (D)me a(G)lone
He wants to (Em)take my money for (D)something I've never been (G)shown
And I (Bm)saw my devil, and I (C)saw my (D)deep blue (G)sea
And I (C)thought about a calico (D)bonnet from (C)Cheyenne to (D)Tenne(G)see

All the (G)news I could bring I met (C)up with the (G)king
On his head an am(D)phetamine (G)crown
Talked about unbuckling that (C)old bible (G)belt
And headed (A)out for some desert (D)town

(G)Out with the truckers and the kickers and the cowboy (C)angels
And a (G)good saloon in every single (C)town
And I remembered (D)something that you once (G)told me
And (C)I'll be damned if (D)it did not come (G)true
(C)Twenty thousand (D)roads I went (G)down (G/F#)down (Em)down
And (C)they all led me (D)straight back home to (G)you
(C)Twenty thousand (D)roads I went (G)down (G/F#)down (Em)down
And (C)they all led me (D)straight back home to (G)you

SCORPION

Capo II

This song is full of little suspended chords that give the tune its distinctive vibe and make it a lot of fun to play. Instead of just naming the chords for you, here's a simple explanation of what you should do.

1. At the end of the first two lines of each verse, while still fingering the Em chord, hammer on and off the second fret of the third string. You should do this after the Em chord during the intro and break, too.
2. At the end of the third line of each verse, while still fingering the Am chord, hammer on and off the first fret of the second string.
3. At the end of the fourth line of each verse, as well as the choruses, while fingering the G chord, hammer on and off the first fret of the second string.

Listen to the CD and you'll hear what I mean.

Intro: (G)(G/F#)(Em) . . . (G)(G/F#)(Em)

In (G)night, in(G/F#)side, at (Em)night
No (G)whispers, no (G/F#)worries, no (Em)words
Just (C)light fills the (Em7)corner of your (Am)eye
Take me (G)in
Take me (D/F#)in

Cold (G)sky, dark Mon(G/F#)tana, long (Em)road
Running (G)fence, radi(G/F#)o, trucks blow (Em)by
Up (C)high, no (Em7)air, big (Am)dreams
Take me (G)back
Take me (D/F#)back

(G)I want to show you every(D/F#)thing, everything
(C)I want to give you every(G)thing, every(D/F#)thing
(G)There's a chance now and (D/F#)then, now and then
(C)No more cut and (G)run
(C)No more cut and (G)run

(G)(G/F#)(Em) . . . (G)(G/F#)(Em)

Blue (G)night, blue (G/F#)world, tracking (Em)you
I'm a (G)scorpion and I'm (G/F#)coming after (Em)you
(C)Running out of (Em7))darkness and (Am)time
Looking for (G)you
Looking for (D/F#)you

Gonna (G)sting you with a (G/F#)kiss from my (Em)lips
Gonna (G)sting you with a (G/F#)piece of my (Em)mind
Gonna (C)sting you with a (Em7)taste of my (Am)skin
Then you're (G)mine
Then you're (D/F#)mine

(G)I want to show you every(D/F#)thing, everything
(C)I want to give you every(G)thing, every(D/F#)thing
(G)There's a chance now and (D/F#)then, now and then
(C)No more cut and (G)run
(C)No more cut and (G)run
(C)No more, no more, (G)no more

STILL LIFE

Capo III

Note: the song gets its airy feeling by using these "incomplete" (C) and (Am) chords:

C: 030020
Am: 002200
Fmaj7: 10321x

(C)Sadness is a little boy (Am)looking
Out the (C)window high above a (Am)city
Counting (Em)statues of people on the (Fmaj7)buildings
(Em)Thinking that the people are (Fmaj7)forever

He wants his (C)father to be a (Am)statue
On the (C)rooftop of his fatherless (Am)home
So that (Em)he can always (Fmaj7)see him
So that (Em)he will never (Fmaj7)leave him

Late at (C)night in the darkness of his (Am)dreaming
His father's (C)words fall down in a (Am)rain storm
And the (Em)words become hands that will (Fmaj7)guide him
Through his (Em)life in the world just be(Fmaj7)ginning

(C)You cannot (G)live in bronze or (Fmaj7)stone
(C)Make your (G)life in flesh and (Fmaj7)bone

(C)Stranded is a man no longer (Am)searching
For the (C)life had hoped for and i(Am)magined
Courting (Em)fear instead of a (Fmaj7)woman
Holding (Em)sorrow as his only com(Fmaj7)panion

Counting (C)days like his money in the (Am)markets
And watching (C)life from the window in his (Am)office
Maybe (Em)one day I'll have the (Fmaj7)courage
Maybe (Em)one day I'll sail across the (Fmaj7)ocean

But I feel (C)safe in the light of my com(Am)puter
(C)This is how I choose to (Am)live
Fixed in (Em)stone a man will (Fmaj7)wither
Running (Em)waters are the life of the (Fmaj7)river

(C)You cannot (G)live in bronze or (Fmaj7)stone
(C)Make your (G)life in flesh and (Fmaj7)bone
(G)Remember (C)me

(C)Frightened is an old man (Am)limping
Through the (C)park on a dark December (Am)day
He stands (Em)frozen at the base of a (Fmaj7)statue
And he (Em)hopes for a warm hand to (Fmaj7)help him

To(C)night he will dream that he is (Am)flying
Over (C)banks of a river he re(Am)members
His father's (Em)voice will echo all a(Fmaj7)round him
His father's (Em)hands will hold him in the (Fmaj7)sky

(C)Now I can sail across the (Am)ocean
(C)Now I will sail across the (Am)ocean
(Em)Now I am sailing across the (Fmaj7)ocean

(C)I cannot (G)live in bronze or (Fmaj7)stone
(C)I must (G)live as flesh and (Fmaj7)bone
(G)Remember (C)me
Remember me
Remember me

THE SWIMMING SONG . . . Loudon Wainwright III

This isn't on any of Lucy's CDs, but she does it during many of her live performances, so, well, here it is. She doesn't really play chords during the first, second or fifth verses, just sorta damps the strings and bangs away. Feel free to play it however you want. I won't tell.

Capo III

Intro: For the intro, just play the chords of the verses one time through.

This (G)summer (C)I went (G)swimming
This (D)summer I might have (Em)drowned
But I held my breath
And I (C)kicked my feet
And I (D)moved my arms a(Em)round
I (D)moved my arms a(G)round

This (G)summer I (C)swam in the (G)ocean
(D)Swam in a swimming (Em)pool
Salt my wound, chlo(C)rined my eyes
I'm a (D)self destructive (Em)fool
I'm a (D)self-destructive (G)fool

This (G)summer I (C)did the (G)backstroke
And you (D)know that that's not (Em)all
I did the breaststroke and the (C)butterfly
And the (D)old Australian (Em)crawl
The (D)old Australian (G)crawl

This (G)summer I (C)swam in a (G)public place
And a (D)reservoir to (Em)boot
At the latter I was in(C)formal
At the (D)former I wore my (Em)suit
I (D)wore my swimming (G)suit

This (G)summer (C)I did (G)swan dives
And (D)jack-knives for you (Em)all
And once when you weren't (C)looking
I (D)did a cannon(Em)ball
I (D)did a cannon(G)ball

This (G)summer (C)I went (G)swimming
This (D)summer I might have (Em)drowned
But I held my breath
And I (C)kicked my feet
And I (D)moved my arms a(Em)round
I (D)moved my arms a(G)round (C)(G)

THE THIEF

Capo III

We were (D)sitting in a (G)cafe
You were (Bm)listening like you had nothing (A)better to do
You were (D)feigning interest (G)badly
I guess (Bm)interest is too (A)hard for you

So I stopped (D)talking and just (G)watched you
Watched the (Bm)way your mouth made (A)faces at me
Watched the (Em)way your eyes looked (F#m)through me
Looking for (G)something new you could (A)take from me

And (D)I know what you (Em)are
(G)You're the thief who (D)steals from your (A)friends
(D)I know what you (Em)are
And every(G)thing in the world does (A)not belong to (D)you

(D)(Em)(G)(A) . . . (D)(Em)(G)(A)

All the (D)things you ever (G)gave me
Were just (Bm)scraps you didn't want (A)anyway
All the (D)people you dis(G)carded
Well I guess you (Bm)never thought you might want them (A)back some day

I've been (D)loyal, I've been (G)honest
To (Bm)tell you the truth, I don't (A)know what for
I've knelt (Em)down with all the (F#m)others
Well I'm (G)not on my (A)knees anymore

And (D)I know what you (Em)are
(G)You're the thief who (D)steals from your (A)friends
(D)I know what you (Em)are
And every(G)thing in the world does (A)not belong to (D)you
Not (Em)you, not (G)you (A)

(D)(Em)(G)(A)

Last (C)night, in the (G)dark, in my (D)mirror
I thought I saw you
I threw the (C)mirror on the (G)floor
And it kept (Em)breaking and breaking and (G)breaking and (A)breaking

And (D)I know what you (Em)are
(G)You're the thief who (D)steals from your (A)friends
(D)I know what you (Em)are
And every(G)thing in the world does (A)not belong to (D)you

And (D)I know what you (Em)are
(G)You're the thief who (D)steals from your (A)friends
(D)I know what you (Em)are
And every(G)thing in the world does (A)not belong to (D)you

(D)Not me not (Em)him not her
Not (G)every single (A)thing in the world
(D)Not me not (Em)him not her
Not (G)every single (A)thing in the world
(D)Not me not (Em)him not her
Not (G)everything in the (A)world (D)

THE TIDE

Capo II

There are (G)demons in the water
There are (D)devils in the sea
There are (C)dangers in the current
When the (G)tide goes out of (D)me

I could (G)drink you under the table
I could (D)drink you out of town
I could (C)drink you off the planet
Drink my(G)self into the (D)ground

CHORUS:
And I have (G)nothing for you to(D)night
I have (Em)nothing for you to(D)night (C)
I have (G)nothing for you to(D)night
I have (Em)nothing for (D)you (C)

I was (G)made to be a good girl
Carried (D)buckets made of stone
Full of (C)envy, full of sorrow
On a (G)tightrope all a(D)lone

And all the (G)time I was on fire
I (D)burned with every stride
And (C)now I see this anger
Is the (G)horse I choose to (D)ride

Now you (G)say you want something nice from me
Well if you (D)find it, take it, it's on me
In the (C)meantime don't bother me
The (G)tide has washed the (D)nice from me

CHORUS

In (G)nothing are the voices
And the (D)pictures of my life
In the (C)nothing of the sky
Is an (G)ocean made of (D)light

In the (G)nothing of my silence
Is a (D)sad-eyed little girl
On a (C)tightrope she is singing
As she (G)passes through this (D)world

CHORUS
