  • AS I AM

    Capo IV

OK, Lori herself showed me this one, so I take that as a pretty good authority. It's basically just a repeated partial-G-shaped bit at the 5th fret (a partial A chord) and the 2nd fret (which I'll call it a G for ease of explanation). Hammer on the 6th string on the A chord before sliding down to the G chord, and also hammer on the 6th string for the G chord (twice) before heading back up to the A. You should really concentrate on driving your pick into those lower strings for a strong, percussive feeling. If you listen to the CD, you'll hear what I mean.

    A: 540xxx
    G: 300xxx

Then, for the chorus, you'll play a C-shaped chord at the 3rd fret (which is actually a D chord: x54030), then add a quick move with your pinky, first on the 5th fret of the B string (x54050) and then the high E string (x54035) before coming back down to a standard C chord in first position (x32010).

I know this sounds complicated, but it's actually pretty easy. Getting the rhythm down is actually more difficult than the chords themselves. Feel free to stop over for a beer and I'll be happy to show it to you.

    Intro: (A)(G) . . . 4x

    WHAT'S ONE MORE TIME

    Capo VIII

    G: 320033
    C: 032033

To do the little signature riff, you'll take your finger on and off the first string when playing the G . . . as usual, play along with the CD and you'll see that doing it is much easier than explaining it.

    Intro: G . . . Em . . . C . . . G . . .

(G)Tell me once that you love me, love me
Tell me lies that you'll call but I know you (Em)won't
    (C)I know you (G)don't
All you want is to meet discretely
To make sure you don't still love (Em)me
    (C)And talk over (G)coffee

(D)I have cried your name so (C)many times
    What's one more (G)time
(D)I have cried these tears (C)for you
    So many (G)times

(G)Tell me once that you need me, need me
Not now, but you did need me (Em)then
    (C)I like to pre(G)tend
The place is cold and the table's sticky
I take a napkin, you watch me wipe it (Em)down
    (C)I'm just spinning (G)round

(D)I have cried your name so (C)many times
    What's one more (G)time
(D)I have cried these tears (C)for you
    So many (G)times
    (C)What's one more (G)time

(Em)And you will pay for my coffee
    (C)So you don't feel (G)guilty
(Em)And then you'll go on and on about
    (C)How it's not me, it's (G)you

    CHORUS

(G)I never took to smoking cigarettes
    I never finish any drink I (Em)start
    (C)But you broke my (G)heart

    CHORUS

    PAPER WINGS AND HALO

In transcribing Lori's songs, one of the things I've noticed is that she loves to keep her finger down on the high G note (first string/third fret) almost throughout entire songs. She often plays her (C) and (F) chords like that, and it provides a nice droning effect. Just plant your pinky on the fret and leave it there . . . and for the G and C chords you'll only have to move your index and middle fingers on the bass strings. The coolest part of the song? The way Lori pronounces "balcony" as "balc-nee." Never fails to make me smile.

(G)When you get to(C) heaven, Mary, (G)tell my mother that (C)I said hi"

    RUBY'S SHOES

    Capo IV

This powerful song, tracing the plight of a young black girl fighting bigotry on the long walk to her all-white school, is another example of Lori's love affair with the the high G note – the third fret on the first string, which shows up in many of her songs. Keep your pinky and ring finger on the third fret on each of the top two strings, and leave them there as you rock back and forth between the G and C chords during the verses, and on the Dsus4 during the chorus. By the way, when playing the the Dsus4, try to wrap your thumb around to nail the F# note on the second fret of the sixth string. If you can't, no sweat . . . just play it as x00233.

And finally, during the "Ruby, if birds can always fly" line, you should play the C chord in its standard form (without the high G note: x32010).

    G: 320033
    C: x32033
    Dsus4: 200233
    Em: 022000

    Intro: (G)(C) (G)(C) (G)(C) (G)(C)

    (G)Ruby's (C)shoes would (G)take her (C)
    A (G)mile or so to (C)school every(G)day (C)
    (G)Where the (C)white people (G)hated her (C)
    They'd (G)scream and hold (C)signs and tell her (G)to go aw(C)ay

    (G)But Ruby's (C)will was (G)stronger (C)
Than the (G)bigots with the (C)signs could ever (G)know (C)
    (G)She stopped every (C)morning on the (G)corner (C)
    And (G)prayed that (C)someday the (G)pain would (C)go

    And she'd (Dsus4)stop and she'd (C)pray
That (Dsus4)all the hatred would (C)go away
She was only (Dsus4)six years old but she (C)knew
    Walk a mile in Ruby's (G)shoes(C) (G)(C) (G)(C) (G)(C)

    (G)Ruby sat a(C)lone in the (G)classroom (C)
    She never (G)dreamed the other (C)children wouldn't (G)come (C)
    They (G)hated (C)her for the (G)color of her (C)skin
    Well (G)color is (C)such an (G)amazing il(C)lusion

    She'd (Dsus4)stop and she'd (C)pray
That (Dsus4)all the hatred would (C)go away
She was only (Dsus4)six years old but she (C)knew
    Walk a mile in Ruby's (G)shoes(C) (G)(C) (G)(C) (G)(C)

    (G)Now Ruby (C)knew about (G)Dorothy (C)
    And the (G)ruby (C)shoes that she (G)wore (C)
    (G)She (C)wondered about (G)Oz some(C)times
Well, well (G)no other (C)child ever (G)walked her shoes be(C)fore

    And she'd (Dsus4)stop and she'd (C)pray
That (Dsus4)all the hatred would (C)go away
She was only (Dsus4)six years old but she (C)knew
    Walk a mile in Ruby's (G)shoes(C) (G)(C)

    (Em)Ruby, if (C)birds can always (D)fly (Dsus4)(D)
    Why oh why can't you and (G)I (C) (G)(C) (G)(C) (G)(C)

    (G)Ruby's (C)shoes would (G)take her (C)
    A (G)mile or so to (C)school every(G)day (C)
    (G)Where the (C)white people (G)hated her (C)
    They'd (G)scream and hold (C)signs and tell her (G)to go away (C)

    And she'd (Dsus4)stop and she'd (C)pray
That (Dsus4)all the hatred would (C)go away
    She'd (Dsus4)stop and she'd (C)pray
That (Dsus4)no other children would be (C)raised this way (G)(C) (G)(C)
    Ruby's(G)(C) (G)shoes(C)

    If (G)birds can (C)fly
    Then (G)why oh (C)why
    If (G)birds can (C)fly then (G)why oh (C)why can't (G)I (C) (G)

    HARDLY SPEAKING A WORD

    Capo VI

    C: 032013

Note: you'll keep your pinky in place on the top string (third fret) throughout verses

    Intro: (G)(G/F#)(C) . . . (G)(G/F#)(C)

    Well I (G)know your (G/F#) life has been (C)hard
I (G)see it in your (G/F#)eyes and I (C)feel it in your heart
When your (G)eyes move (G/F#)down to the (C)floor
And your (G)mouth changes (G/F#)shape, and your (C)voice sounds sore
    I can (G)hold you (G/F#) close in my (C)arms
    And (G)tell you (G/F#) that you're (C)special
    And that you (G)treasure (G/F#)such great (C)charms
And that you (G)always (G/F#)keep my (C)heart full
    But I'm (G)hardly (G/F#)speaking a (C)word
    I'm (G)hardly (G/F#)speaking a (C)word
    And I (G)know these (G/F#)things should be (C)heard
    But I'm (G)hardly (G/F#)speaking a (C)word

(D)And your struggle (C)never changes me
(D)I'll never be able to (C)see the things you see
(D)They say that you see (C)things differently
    (D)Just because it's different doesn't (C)mean it can't be free
    But I'm (G)hardly (G/F#)speaking a (C)word
    I'm (G)hardly (G/F#)speaking a (C)word

    So I (G)wonder, (G/F#)what do they (C)know
(G)Maybe the (G/F#)problem is (C)me not letting go
    Of a (G)little boy who's (G/F#)smarter than (C)me
Who (G)can't sit (G/F#)still and (C)sees things differently
(D)And I'm yelling when (C)I should be whispering
(D)I'm pushing when (C)I should be carrying
    (D)And I don't understand (C)anything I've heard
    (D)I should be yelling I (C)love you
    But I'm hardly speaking a (G)word (G/F#)(C)

    (G)(G/F#)(C)

    So I (G)wonder, (G/F#)what do I (C)know
(G)Maybe the (G/F#)problem is (C)me not letting go

Who (G)can't sit (G/F#)still and (C)sees things differently

    IT'S EASY WHEN YOU SMILE

    C: x32013
    C/B: x20013
    G: 320033
    Fmaj7: x03213

Note: After the (Am) chord, Lori kinda suspends it, so hammer on the second string and play it like this: 002230

    Intro: (C)(C/B)(Am)(G) . . . (C)(C/B)(Am)(G)

    (C)It's easy when you (C/B)smile
    We can talk a(Am)while
Just lie here in my (G)arms
    Safe and (C)warm
Outside the (C/B)night is so un(Am)clear
    Stay here
    And (G)everything will disap(C)pear (C/B)(Am)(G)

    (C)It's easy when you (C/B)laugh
    Troubles cut in (Am)half
Where I will go with(G)out you
    I don't (C)know
Outside the (C/B)night is breezing (Am)by
    Don't cry
And (G)everything will be all (Fmaj7)right

(G)Hold me, hold me, (Fmaj7) stay
    To(G)morrow's far a(Fmaj7)way
    And so are (G)we
    And that's why it's (C)easy (C/B)(Am)(G)

    (C)It's easy when you (C/B)say
    We can find a (Am)way
    Don't worry about it (G)now
    We'll get through it some(C)how
Outside the (C/B)night is almost (Am)gone
    Stay strong
And (G)maybe we can still go (Fmaj7)on

    (G)Hold me, hold me, (Fmaj7)stay
    To(G)morrow's far (Fmaj7)away
    And so are (G)we

    (C)It's easy when you (C/B)smile
    We can talk a(Am)while
Just lie here in my (G)arms
    Safe and(C) warm
    (C/B)Oh . . . (Am)oh easy
    (G)It's so easy when you (C)smile (C/B)(Am)(G)(C)

    PAYING THE PRICE

One of the reasons I've always hesitated posting a transcription of this song (which, by the way, was written by Bob Giroux, Lori's brother) is that it's really a piano song, and what's more, a piano song that doesn't necessarily translate well to guitar. But I've gotten enough requests for it that I figured I'd give it a shot. It's basically pretty simple, and the only place it gets a little funky is in the chorus/bridge section, with a strange bass sequence in the fourth line . . . this one for example:

    (G)Full of (B7)promi(Em)ses (G6)which are (C)never met

For purposes of easy fingering, you can play these chords in their standard positions as indicated here, but to make the progression in the line sound close to what the piano is doing, make sure to pick the bolded notes as your bass line:

    G: 320003
    B7: x21200x
    Em: 022000
    G6: xx0000
    C: x32010

    My master for (Am)life
    (D)All my (G)life

    (C)Just when I think you'll (Bm)let me be
    (F)I'll awake knowing you've been (Em)haunting me

    SWALLOWS ME WHOLE

    Capo III

There's basically two different versions of G in the song . . . one's the G I'll refer to as G*, which is basically a rock back-and-forth with the C in the verses (listen and you'll hear), and the other is the "standard" G in the chorus. Same thing with the Am . . . on the chorus, add your pinky on the first string, third fret. Actually, you'll leave your finger here throughout the whole chorus.

    C: x32033
    G*: 020033
    G: 320033
    Am: 002210
    Am*: 002213
    F: x03213

    Intro: (C)(G*) . . . (C)(G*) . . . (C)(G*) . . . (C)(G*)

    (C)You say you (G*)think you can (C)help me (G*)
    (C)Think of me as (G*)someone who (C)bleeds (G*)
Well (Am)I never told you to (F)love me
    That's your sort of (C)greed (G*)(C)(G*)

    (C)I can make my (G*)own de(C)cisions (G*)
    (C)I can do what (G*)I want to (C)do (G*)
And I (Am)don't have to share my a(F)ddiction
    With any of (C)you (G*)(C)(G*)

(Am*)I'll be just (G)fine out of my (F)mind
I like it this (G)way I know when to (F)pray
    I'm in con(G)trol till it swallows me (C)whole (G*)

    (C)(G*) . . . (C)(G*) . . . (C)(G*)

    (C)I know you'd (G*)like to con(C)trol me (G*)
    (C)You always (G*)need to be (C)right (G*)
Because I'm (Am)late once or twice
    Lose a (F)job or stay out all (C)night (G*)Ö(C)(G*)

    (C)But I can see (G*)high a(C)bove it (G*)
    (C)The world is a (G*)boundary for (C)you (G*)
And I (Am)know that you'd like to see (F)through it
    The way that I (C)do (G*)(C)(G*)

(Am*)I'll be just (G)fine out of my (F)mind
I like this it this (G)way I know when to (F)pray
    And I don't need (G)any until I need (F)more
    I said I was (G)sorry a hundred times be(F)fore
And I'm in con(G)trol till it swallows me (C)whole (G*)(C)(G*)

    (C)(G*) . . . (C)(G*)

Well (C)you say that (G*)you have to (C)leave now (G*)
    You (C)can't stand the (G*)things that I (C)do (G*)
And you (Am)know that I'll need this (F)more
    Than I'll ever need (C)you (G*)(C)(G*)

(Am*)I'll be just (G)fine out of my (F)mind
I like this it this (G)way I know when to (F)pray
    And I don't need (G)any until I need (F)more
    And I don't need (G)any until I need (F)more
    And I don't need (G)any until I need (F)more
    And I'm in con(G)trol (C)(G*)(C)

    DON'T TELL HER

    Capo III

    A: 002220
    Asus2/B: 020220
    Gmaj9: 020202
    Dsus2/F#: 200230
    Dsus4: x00233

The (A)(Asus2/B)(Gmaj9) sequence is actually pretty easy. You'll play an (A) in standard position, which means your index finger is fretting the fourth string, middle finger the third string, and ring finger the second string. So, for the (Asus2/B), just walk your index finger over to the second fret on the fifth string. And when you get to the (Gmaj9), just walk your ring finger backwards to the second fret on the first string. Then, after playing the (Gmaj9) chord, before you go back to the (A), pull your finger off the first string, leaving you at (020200). Try it, it's fun.

    Intro: (A)(Asus2/B)(Gmaj9) . . . (A)(Asus2/B)(Gmaj9) . . .

(A)Don't tell her that I drink (Asus2/B)tea and not (Gmaj9)coffee
(A)I'd pre(Asus2/B)fer if you didn't talk at (Gmaj9)all about me
    (A)Even in a (Asus2/B)brief casual (Gmaj9)chat
(A)Don't tell her how I (Asus2/B)loved your smile or (Gmaj9)things like that

    (A)(Asus2/B)(Gmaj9)

(A)Don't tell her how (Asus2/B)I was your best (Gmaj9)friend
(A)Don't tell her how it (Asus2/B)could never work out (Gmaj9)in the end
(A)Don't tell her how you (Asus2/B)learned a lesson (Gmaj9)from me
(A)And that's why you have to (Asus2/B)take things slow and (Gmaj9)easy

(G)If you can for(Dsus2/F#)give me for my (A)faults
Then (G)maybe it can (Dsus2/F#)work out after (A)all
I (G)can't stand anybody (Dsus2/F#)knowing me the way you (A)do
    (D)And I can't (Dsus4)stand the thought of (Gmaj9)her knowing (A)you (Asus2/B)(Gmaj9)

(A)Don't tell her about that(Asus2/B) camping trip we (Gmaj9)took
(A)Don't tell her how I (Asus2/B)bite my lip and (Gmaj9)never finish a book
(A)Don't tell her how I (Asus2/B)like to sleep in (Gmaj9)late
    (A)Or that I be(Asus2/B)lieve in romance (Gmaj9)and fate

    CHORUS

Well, (G)what if we meet on some (G/F#)cross-town street
And you'll (A)introduce us and we'll finally meet
And (G)I'll be alone when you're (G/F#)walking away
And I'll be (A)wondering what she's going to say
    Well I (G)know we'll never be the (G/F#)way we (D)were (Dsus4)
    But don't (A)tell her (Asus2/B)(Gmaj9)

(A)Don't tell her that I'm (Asus2/B)too old for my (Gmaj9)age
(A)Don't tell her that this (Asus2/B)love of mine was (Gmaj9)just a stage
    (A)She doesn't need to (Asus2/B)know my point of (Gmaj9)view
(A)She'll never (Asus2/B)love you like the (Gmaj9)way that I do

    CHORUS

    NEVER BE BACK

The intro (and the progression during the verses) is essentially a double walk-down on the first and fifth strings: with third fret, second fret, and open string being the featured elements in the progression. The verses are single-string picked while the choruses and bridge are strummed.

    Intro: (C) (Gmaj7/B) (Am7) [2x]

    (C)You and I for (Gmaj7/B)so many (Am7)years
It's (C)just not that (Gmaj7/B)easy to (Am7)pack up the tears and the (C)pain
    (Gmaj7/B)And (Am7)forget
    We (C)just can't (Gmaj7/B)end it when I'm (Am7)not through with it yet

    We (C)build our walls (Gmaj7/B)and di(Am7)vide
    And it's (C)so much (Gmaj7/B)simpler when we don't (Am7)have to decide
    Who is (C)right . . . (Gmaj7/B)as if it (Am7)matters
    There's (C)never any (Gmaj7/B)doors and we've (Am7)burned all our letters

    CHORUS:
    But it's (G)wrong
    To (D)live life with(Dsus)out you
    It's (G)gone, I know it's (D)gone (Dsus4) (D)
But I (Am7)can't let it go
    (Gmaj7)Knowing it will (G)never be (Am7)back

    (C) (Gmaj7/B) (Am7)

    (C)You and I through (Gmaj7/B)so many (Am7)fights
And it's (C)not about the (Gmaj7/B)one that we (Am7)had the other night
    It's the (C)ones (Gmaj7/B)we've never (Am7)had
When you (C)close your eyes to (Gmaj7/B)me and pre(Am7)tend you're not mad

    CHORUS

    BRIDGE:
What if this is(Em) our one chance (C)
    What if it's a (D)test
    And we (Dsus4)failed
    We (Dsus4/hold)failed

    (C) (Gmaj7/B) (Am7) [2x]

    (C)You and I for (Gmaj7/B)so many (Am7)years
It's (C)just not that (Gmaj7/B)easy to (Am7)pack up the tears and the (C)pain
    (Gmaj7/B)And (Am7)forget
    We (C)just can't (Gmaj7/B)end it when I'm (Am7)not through with it yet

    And it's (G)wrong
    To (D)live life with(Dsus4)out you
    It's (G)gone, I know it's (D)gone (Dsus4) (D)
But I (Am7)can't let it go
    (Gmaj7)Knowing it will (G)never
Well I (Am7)can't let it go
    (Gmaj7)Knowing it will (G)never
    I (Am7)can't let it go
    (Gmaj7)Knowing it will (G)never be (Am7)back
    (C)Knowing it will (Gmaj7/B)never be (Am7)back

    BORROW ME

    Capo IV

    Dsus2/F#: 200230
    Dsus2/F: 100230

    Intro: (A)(Dsus2/F#)(Dsus2/F) . . . (A)(Dsus2/F#)(Dsus2/F)

(A)This is cold and dark, this (Dsus2/F#)place
You are broken what will re(Dsus2/F)place
The hole that has been (A)dug here
    Emptiness left (Dsus2/F#)where
    Once I was so a(Dsus2/F)ware
    Aware of (A)you (Dsus2/F#)(Dsus2/F)

(A)You are quiet, you are (Dsus2/F#)meek
    Unlike me so indis(Dsus2/F)creet
    I am plainly a(A)lone
Once you open up you (Dsus2/F#)close
    I fell I'm winning then I don't (Dsus2/F)know
    Who you (A)are

You (G)came to me so battered and a(D)lone
You wondered (C)how to (A)go on
    (G)Life is unforgiving
    And (D)you need(C) to for(A)give
Well (G)look at me your childhood friend
    Who's (D)never had the (C)trouble to be (A)stepped on
    (Dsus2/F#)I wish you'd see
    (Dsus2/F)That you can borrow (A)me (Dsus2/F#)(Dsus2/F)

(A)So push me where you (Dsus2/F#)want
Let in all the ghosts to (Dsus2/F)haunt
    I welcome such (A)trouble
But what if things don't (Dsus2/F#)change
And you find yourself to (Dsus2/F)blame
    For all this a(A)lone

Well (G)I have listened to your silence
    (D)These walls are (C)beaming with for(A)giveness
(G)You are up and then you're down
    But (D)mostly you're (C)somewhere in-be(A)tween
    (Dsus2/F#)You should be free
    (Dsus2/F)Until then borrow (A)me
    Bor(Dsus2/F#)row me (Dsus2/F)

    (A)Carry your troubles so hea(Dsus2/F#)vy
Over your heart and then through (Dsus2/F)me
    Your mind's a separate (A)matter
When your eyes are blind I (Dsus2/F#)see
When your voice is swallowed (Dsus2/F)I speak free
And love you like I (A)do

Well (G)I am not an angel
    Sent from (D)heaven to (C)save your (A)soul
(G)I am just a no good sinner
    (D)Who loves you (C)more than (A)life
    (Dsus2/F#)You could be free
    (Dsus2/F)Wouldn't you rather borrow (A)me (Dsus2/F#)(Dsus2/F)(A)

    NOT IN THIS LIFE

    Asus4: x02230
    Asus2: x02200

Note: On the A chord (x02220) in the choruses, hammer on the second fret of the fourth string.

It's (A)cold for early June but the sun is rising fast
There's a (Bm)dew up on the quiet hill where he lays in the grass
(G)Staring up at Heaven's gates to see if he can see in Jesus' (A)eyes

The (A)woman that he thinks of is still lying fast asleep
As he (Bm)asks for resolution and prays his soul to keep
A (G)man of God in love can't touch a man of God, temptation, sun(A)rise (Asus4)

    CHORUS:
    But it doesn't mean I don't (E)love you
    It doesn't mean I don't (A)care
It doesn't mean I wouldn't (E)love to run my fingers through your (A)hair
    It doesn't mean I wouldn't (E)make sweet love to you so (A)right
    It (G)just means (D)not in this (A)life

This has (A)always been the path for him since the age of nine or ten
And if (Bm)only he remembered now the things he knew back then
It (G)seemed God had a plan for him
    A clear and decisive (A)role

But he (A)never would have seen her if she hadn't come to pray
If she (Bm)didn't need forgiveness, he'd be a holy man today
If she (G)wasn't so damn beautiful
If her eyes didn't bleed into his (A)soul (Asus4)

    CHORUS

    (G)Dear God, I am (D)sorry for my (A)sins (Asus4)
    Dear (G)God, I am sorry for the (D)situation I'm (A)in (Asus4)(Asus2)(A)

He'll (A)analyze the burning, the tremble in his chest
(Bm)Falls behind on duties and he's sleeping less and less
He doesn't (G)pay attention in church
He doesn't answer to his name when people (A)call

He's (A)got himself this apple and it's looking so damn good
But (Bm)just because he can bite it, it doesn't mean he should
He (G)lets her know his feelings
Eden is burning and he doesn't (A)care at all (Asus4)

    CHORUS

    (A)I'm sorry for my sins
    I'm sorry for my sins
    I'm sorry for my sins
    I'm sorry for my sins
    I'm sorry for my sins
    I'm sorry for my sins
Well I am sorry for my sins, yeah
I am sorry for my sins

    But it doesn't mean I don't (E)love you
    It doesn't mean I don't (A)care
It doesn't mean I wouldn't (E)love to run my fingers through your (A)hair
    It doesn't mean I wouldn't (E)make sweet love to you so (A)right
It (G)just means (D)not in this
    (G)Just means (D)not in this
    It (G)just means (D)not in this (A)life (Asus4)(Asus2)

    (Asus2)I'm sorry for my
    I'm sorry for my
    I'm sorry for my sins

    JOSEPHINE

    Capo III

This song, from the re-released version of Paper Wings and Halo, is actually pretty easy, and a lot of fun to play. The chorus is real straightforward. On the verses, though, there's a couple of sliding moves you'll have to make . . . again, real easy.

The first move starts with an Em (022000), which you'll slide up two frets (044000) where I indicate an asterisk, or up three frets (055000) where there's two asterisks.

The next move starts with an Asus2 (002200, although I'll call it an A), which you'll slide up two frets (004400) where there's an asterisk, or three frets (005500) at the (you guessed it) two asterisk mark.
