ACES

This transcription is derived from a letter I received from Cheryl back in 1987 after I'd written to her asking for some help with this song, so I'm taking that as a pretty good indication of its accuracy. It's not 100% reflective of the version on the 1990 release of Circles & Arrows, since it's based on how she was playing it three years earlier, but it's pretty close, except for the fact that in the earlier version, the second chorus ended with slightly different lyrics:

We tried from the beginning
So I can't believe the end
Don't let me hear you sayin' I am not your friend

Capo II

(D) x00232
(Gmaj7): 300432
(Gmaj7/E): 300430
(A*): 500650
(Dsus4): x00233
(Em): 022000
(D/F#): 20020x
(G): 30000x
(A): 002220

Hint: to go from the (Gmaj7/E) to the (A*), just keep your hand in position and slide it up two frets. Also, the (Em)(D/F#)(G)(A) is basically just a bass-line walk-up on which you should accentuate the notes in bold.

Intro: (D)(Gmaj7)(Gmaj7/E)(A*) . . . (Em)(D/F#)(G)(A)

(D)My old friend, (Gmaj7)you said to (Gmaj7/E)me
I ain't (A*)being what I'm (Dsus4)s'pose to be (D)
I don't know, (Gmaj7)it could be (Gmaj7/E)true
I know I (A*)wasn't always (Em)there for (D/F#)you (G)

(A)Now (D)you're ready to walk out
(Gmaj7)You're ready to (Gmaj7/E)run
Talk to me, (A*)can't you see
I would (Em)never want to (D/F#)do
What it (G)seems I've (A)done
You (D)can't deal me the aces
And (Gmaj7)think I wouldn't pl(Gmaj7/E)ay
Don't let this be the (A*)reason you would (Em)walk a(D/F#)way (G) (A)

(D)The things you think (Gmaj7)I should (Gmaj7/E)do
I've never (A*)understood that (Dsus4)part of you (D)
I know I've tried (Gmaj7)to be your (Gmaj7/E)friend
But you feel (A*)undermined and (Em)hurt (D/F#)again (G)

(A)Now (D)don't let it convince you
(Gmaj7)Don't take it to (Gmaj7/E)heart
Compromise and (A*)realize
You can (Em)never really (D/F#)run
Every(G)thing you (A)start
You (D)can't deal me the aces
And (Gmaj7)think I wouldn't pl(Gmaj7/E)ay
Don't let this be the (A*)reason you would (Em)walk a(D/F#)way (G) (A)

(D)And I guess I said (Gmaj7)I couldn't (Gmaj7/E)see
How things could (A*)turn out like they've (Dsus4)come to be (D)
If I lied, (Gmaj7)if I (Gmaj7/E)knew
I was (A*)only trying to (Em)think of (D/F#)you (G)

(A)Now (D)don't let it convince you
(Gmaj7)Please don't take it to (Gmaj7/E)heart
Compromise and (A*)realize
You can (Em)never really (D/F#)run
Every(G)thing you (A)start
You (D)can't deal me the aces
And (Gmaj7)think I wouldn't pl(Gmaj7/E)ay
Don't let this be the (A*)reason you would (Em)walk a(D/F#)way (G)

(A)Now (D)you're ready to walk out
(Gmaj7)You're ready to (Gmaj7/E)run
Talk to me, (A*)can't you see
I would (Em)never want to (D/F#)do
What it (G)seems I've (A)done
You (D)can't deal me the aces
And (Gmaj7)think I wouldn't pl(Gmaj7/E)ay
Don't let this be the (A*)reason you would (Em)walk a(D/F#)way (G)(A)(D)

G: 320033

(C)(G/B)(D/F#)

(C)The (G/B)storm has blown this (D/F#)great big beauty (G)down

ADDICTED

D/F#: 20023x
Bb: 688766 (this is simply an F-chord shape played at the 6th fret)
Dm/C: x30231

Intro: (A)(D/F#)(G) . . . (A)(D/F#)(G)

(A)She says she hates to sleep a(D/F#)lone, but she'll do it to(G)night
(A)She wants to grab her tele(D/F#)phone, but she knows it ain't (G)right
So if he won't (C)call, she'll sur(F)vive
And if he don't (Bb)care, she'll get (Dm)by (Dm/C)
Climb into (G)bed, bury her (C)head, and (F)cry(C) (G)

(A)From the beginning he was (D/F#)all anyone could have (G)been
(A)They were delirious with (D/F#)love, they were certain to (G)win
Now he's breaking (C)plans more and (F)more
And he's leaving (Bb)notes on her (Dm)door
Took a (Dm/C)trip out of (G)town, couldn't turn this one (C)down
He said, "I (F)guess I should have (C)told you be(G)fore"

(A)She says she feels like she's ad(Dm)dicted to a (Dm/C)real bad (G)thing
Always sitting, waiting, (C)wondering if the phone will (F)ring
She knows she bounces like a (Dm)yo-yo when he (Dm/C)pulls her (G)string
It hurts to feel like such a (Am)fool (G)(C)
She wants to (A)tell him not to (Dm)call or come a(Dm/C)round a(G)gain
He doesn't need her now at (C)all the way that she needs (F)him
She's on the edge about to (Dm)fall from leaning (Dm/C)out and (G)in
And she don't know which way to (Am)move (G)(F) (G)

(A)She wants to be fair, she couldn't (D/F#)say he was ever un(G)kind
(A)But if she could bear to walk a(D/F#)way, she thinks he wouldn't (G)mind
'Cause he just keeps him(C)self so a(F)part
And there's no one (Bb)else in her (Dm)heart
So she's (Dm/C)taking a (G)dive from an emotional (C)high
And (F)coming (C)down (G)hard

(A)She's determined to try, but she'll still give (D/F#)in when he gives her a (G)call
(A)She'll ask herself why, but in the (D/F#)end it won't matter at (G)all
Sure, she could sit at (C)home, stay in(F)side
And sleep a(Bb)lone with her (Dm)pride
And as she (Dm/C)walks out her (G)door, she feels as weak as be(C)fore
With (F)nothing (C)to (G)hide

(A)She says she feels like she's ad(Dm)dicted to a (Dm/C)real bad (G)thing
Always sitting, waiting, (C)wondering if the phone will (F)ring
She knows she bounces like a (Dm)yo-yo when he (Dm/C)pulls her (G)string
It hurts to feel like such a (Am)fool (G)(C)
She wants to (A)tell him not to (Dm)call or come a(Dm/C)round a(G)gain
He doesn't need her now at (C)all the way that she needs (F)him
She's on the edge about to (Dm)fall from leaning (Dm/C)out and (G)in
She don't know which way to (Am)move (G)(C)

She says she (A)feels like she's ad(Dm)dicted to a (Dm/C)real bad (G)thing
Always sitting, waiting, (C)wondering if the phone will (F)ring
She knows she bounces like a (Dm)yo-yo when he (Dm/C)pulls her (G)string
It hurts to feel like such a (Am)fool (G)
(F)And she don't (G)know which way to (Am)move (G)
(F)It hurts to (G)feel like such a (Am)fool (G)(C)

ALL THE LIVE LONG DAY

Capo III

C: x32033
Am7: x02013

Intro: (G)

The sun is (G)shinin', (C)makin' this room so (G)bright
And the cats (G/F#)are (Em)sleepin', (C)right up on the table
Breakin' all the rules in plain (D)sight
There's a (G)cloud colored moon (C)floatin' in the blue
Not (Am7)waitin' for the sun to go (D)away
I just wish I could (G)walk with you and (C)talk with you
(D)All the live long (G)day

We never really had a winter, it (C)never came and now it's (G)gone
And the days (G/F#)grow (Em)longer, like a (C)late night road
Like the odds you'll come back (D)home
But (G)I don't mind (C)wasting my time
(Am7)Waitin' for the ache to go a(D)way
I don't mind (G)telling you it's (C)what I do
(D)All the live long (G)day

All the (D)live long (G)day, I (C)wonder (G/B)what I'll (D)do
I don't see no (G)way, of (C)getting (G/B)over (D)you

The boys were in the (G)back field, (C)sortin' out the who and (G)when
It's like cat (G/F#)graf(Em)fiti, but they (C)read it with their nose
And it's written from the other (D)end
Though (G)James takes it in with a (C)different spin
He (Am7)likes to read the Sniff and (D)Spray
It's just (G)them and me, and (C)my ennui
(D)All the live long day

All the (D)live long (G)day, I (C)wonder (G/B)what I'll (D)do
I don't see no (G)way, of (C)getting (G/B)over (D)you

I was watchin' the (G)sunset, (C)wishin' you were watchin' (G)too
Through the win(G/F#)ter (Em)branches
(C)Drop jaw red, Maxfield Parrish (D)blue
Then a (G)windy night with the (C)stars so bright
The (Am7)trees just bow and (D)sway
I been (G)close to blue and (C)missing you
(D)All the live long (G)day
I been (G)close to blue and (C)missing you
(D)All the live long (G)day (C)(G)(C)(D)(G) . . . (fade)

ARROW

Capo IV

Gmaj7: 32400x
D/F#: 200232

During the intro and the first line of each verse, you should walk up from the (Am) chord to the (C) chord with a 5th string/2nd fret transition note. Also, during first and third lines of the two bridge sections, where I've indicated the asterisks, you should transition into the (Em) with a Am7-shaped sequence that slides down from xx4030 (*) to xx2010 (**). This is one of those instances where you should listen to the CD and you'll hear exactly what I mean.

Intro: (Am)(C)(D)(Gmaj7)

I wish I could (Am)fa(C)ll in (D/F#)love
Though it (Gmaj7)only leads to trouble, oh I (C)know it does
(C/B)Still I'd (Am)fool myself and (Am/G)gladly just to (D/F#)feel I was
In (Em)love, (D/F#)in (G)love

I wish I could (Am)feel my (C)heartbeat (D/F#)rise
And (Gmaj7)gaze into some gentle warm ex(C)cited eyes
(C/B)And (Am)give myself as (Am/G)truly as an (D/F#)arrow flies
In (Em)wind(D/F#)less (G)skies

Oh, I re*mem**ber (Em)you in the (A7)TV (D/F#)light
Holding you (C)close to (G)me where we (D/F#)lay
And now I *wish **I (Em)knew some of those (A7)softer (D/F#)nights
Whispering (C)quiet(G)ly, feeling you (Am)turn (Am/G)to (D/F#)me

'Cause only last (Am)night in the (C)winter (D/F#)dark
I (Gmaj7)dreamed of how you loved in all your (C)innocence
(C/B)And I've (Am)never known a (Am/G)softer warmer (D/F#)feeling since
Or a (Em)tru(D/F#)er (G)heart

But maybe these (Am)dreams are (C)leading (D/F#)me
Maybe (Gmaj7)love is not as gentle as my (C)memory
(C/B)Maybe (Am)time and wishful (Am/G)half-remembered (D/F#)fantasy
Are the (Em)great(D/F#)est (G)part

Oh, but I re*mem**ber (Em)you in the (A7)TV (D/F#)light
Holding you (C)close to (G)me where we (D/F#)lay
And now I *wish **I (Em)knew some of those (A7)softer (D/F#)nights
Whispering (C)quiet(G)ly, feeling you (Am)turn (Am/G)to (D/F#)me

I wish I could (Am)feel my (C)heartbeat (D/F#)rise
And (Gmaj7)gaze into some gentle warm ex(C)cited eyes
(C/B)And (Am)give myself as (Am/G)truly as an (D/F#)arrow flies
In (Em)wind(D/F#)less (G)skies

Oh I wish I could (Am)fa(C)ll in (D/F#)love
Though it (Gmaj7)only leads to trouble, oh I (C)know it does
(C/B)Still I'd (Am)fool myself and (Am/G)gladly just to (D/F#)feel I was
In (Em)love (D/F#)(G)

(Em)(A7)(D/F#)
(C)(G)(D/F#)
(Em)(A7)(D/F#)
(C)(G)(Am)(Am/G)(D/F#) . . . (fade out)

GANDHI/BUDDHA

Capo II

Note: The (Am7)(Am7/B)(C) progression in the last line of the chorus is a fifth-string walk-up.

Intro: (G)(D/F#) . . . (G)(D/F#)

Feel this (G)wind blow, (Em)scatters all these (C)leaves like paper (D/F#)rain
Feel these (G)days roll (Em)back into our (C)winter lives a(D/F#)gain
The (Em7)tangle at the (C)garden fence is (D)brown and dry
You (Em7)call me out and (C)point to your No(D)vember sky

CHORUS:
I musta been (G)Gandhi or Buddha or (D/F#)someone like that
I musta saved (C)lives by the hundreds (D/F#)everywhere I went
I musta brought (G)rest to the restless, (D/F#)fed the hungry too
I musta done (Am7)something(Am7/B) (C)great to (D/F#)get to have (G)you (D/F#) (G)(D/F#)

And when the (G)cold comes and (Em)you are by your (C)fire and fast a(D/F#)sleep
I'll turn a (G)light on, to (Em)watch the snow out(C)side fall soft and (D/F#)deep
And (Em7)when the winter (C)morning shines all (D)white and blue
We'll (Em7)watch the dogs run (C)through the field like (D)children do

CHORUS

Well I suppose (Am7)stranger (Am7/B)things have (D/F#)come to (G)pass
Many's the (Am7)forest (Am7/B)I can't (D/F#)see
I was so (Am7)down and (Am7/B)lost and (D/F#)fading (G)fast
How did you (Em7)find your (C)way to (D/F#)me?

I musta been (G)Gandhi or Buddha or (D/F#)someone like that
I musta saved (C)lives by the hundreds (D/F#)everywhere I went
I musta brought (G)rest to the restless, (D/F#)fed the hungry too
I musta done (Am7)something(Am7/B) (C)great to (D/F#)get to have (G)you (D/F#)
I musta done (Em7)something(C) (G)great

HOWL AT THE MOON

Capo II

This is a pretty simple three chord song. In the body of the transcription, I'll refer to the chords as (G), (C) and (D) for simplicity's sake, although they're actually (Gadd9), (Cadd9) and (D/F#) and played as indicated. You can, of course, play them in their standard form if you like.

Gadd9: 32020x (or standard G: 320003)
Cadd9: x3203x (or standard C: x32010)
D/F#: 20023x (or standard D: x00232)

Intro: (G)(D)(C)(D)

If (G)I were maybe a (D)wolf or a dog
I (C)wouldn't have to speak
(D)Wouldn't have to talk
Just (G)eat my dinner and (D)go for a walk
And (C)ho(D)wl at the (G)moon

And if (G)I were laying there (D)just like you
(C)All curled up the (D)way dogs do
I'd (G)dream that dream that you're (D)dreamin' too
And (C)ho(D)wl at the (C)moon

(C)Ho(D)wl at the (G)moon
(C)Ho(D)wl at the (G)moon

And if (G)I could carry your (D)black and white
(C)Sleep so sound (D)wake so nice
I'd (G)keep real close to my (D)own advice
And (C)ho(D)wl at the (G)moon

Oh, (C)you know something (D)I don't know
(C)You go places (D)I can't go
You (G)lift your head when the (D)breezes blow
To (C)voices older than (D)time

I'll (G)keep you close
Oh, I (D)like you near
I'll (C)touch your head and (D)pull your ear
And (G)watch you resting while (D)I sit here
And (C)ho(D)wl at the (G)moon

(C)Ho(D)wl at the (G)moon
(C)Ho(D)wl at the (G)moon
(C)Ho(D)wl at the (G)moon

I'll (G)watch you resting while (D)I sit here
And (C)ho(D)wl at the (G)moon

LITTLE KIDS

Capo II

This hysterical song is not on any of Cheryl's CDs. But I do have a videotape of her singing it on the old show American Music Shop, so I worked up this transcription from that performance.

Now (G)don't pull their (E)tails
(A)No, they're not (F#)mean
And (Bm)yes, if they (Bm/A)bite you, it (G)hurts
It's just a (E)Sears (A)coffee ma(F#)chine
(Bm)Nobody (Bm/A)knows how it (Esus)works(E) (A)(Asus)(A)

The (D)company's (G)gone, I'm (A)sitting (D)alone
A(G)way from the noise and the (A)fuss
The (D)pets have re(G)turned and this (A)weekend I've (D)learned
Little (G)children are (A)nothing like (Dsus4)us(D)

'Cause (A)they put their food in ri(G)diculous (D)places
And (A)they leave their fingerprints (G)on their own (A)faces
Oh (D)how could you (G)say we all (A)started this (D)way?

And they (Dsus4)run through my (D)house
And they (G)torment my dogs
And I (A)surely do love little (D)kids (Dsus2)(D)

MRS. PINOCCI'S GUITAR

I've captured this transcription by watching Cheryl's concert video What Do I Care I Don't Have Any Kids Construction Company Inc. so I'm relatively certain I've got it right. The only difference is that she does it Capo IV on the video and does it two frets higher on the CD.

Capo VI

Intro: (D)(A)(G)(D)

(D)Diane and (A)Billy (G)been friends for(D)ever
They go back a (D/C#)long time
They (G)grew up to(A)gether

And (Em)Mrs. (A)Pinocci's (D)guitar

ONE LOVE

I've had several requests for this song, but have never made a serious attempt at transcribing it because – as Cheryl mentions in the liner notes to Mrs. Pinocci's Guitar – it's in a pretty bizarre tuning: FGDGCD. But I love a challenge, so here it is. First, here's how to get to the tuning:

1. Turn the low E (6th) string up to F
2. Turn the low A (5th) string down to G
3. Turn the high B (2nd) string up to C (carefully!)
4. Turn the high E (1st) string down to D

I'm not exactly sure what the chords are called, but in playing around with a guitar in standard tuning, they seem to be variations of chords in the key of C, so that's how I'll describe them here. There are some chords in the bridge section I just can't figure out the name for, so for those, I'll just show the fingering.

C: x55000
C/B: x45000
F: x23000
G: 203000
G/B: x40020
C/addE: x55040
G7: x0555x (This is really just a transition chord at 2:21 and 2:25 after the second chorus. It's also the chord that ends the song.)

In the second sequence of the intro, and in the verses, between the (C) and (C/B) chords, slide the finger that's on the 5th fret of the 5th string up to the 7th fret as a transitional grace note. Listen to the CD and you'll hear what I mean.

Intro: (C)(C/B)(F)(G) . . . (C)(C/B)(F)(G)

Everywhere I (C)turn(C/B) everyone is (F)lost in this (G)thing
'Cause something feels (C)gone (C/B)
Life is nothing like we (F)dreamed it might (G)be (F)(G/B)
And we (C/addE)don't move (F)forward (G/B)
(C/addE)Can't move (F)back (G/B)
We (C/addE)hold our (F)hands out hoping (G)for that

(C/addE)One love that's (C/B)all of it
(F)Deep nights and (G)qui(F)et (G/B)days
(C/addE)Long lovers, (C/B)old comforts
(F)Feel like some (G)ball (F)and (G/B)chain (C)(C/B)(F)(G)

I guess we're really gettin' (C)old (C/B)
Always worrying we're (F)wasting our (G)time
Wantin' somethin' new to (C)hold (C/B)
Some affair would be the (F)perfect (G)crime (F)(G/B)
(C/addE)Long roads (F)crumble (G/B)
For(C/addE)evers fall a(F)part (G/B)
One (C/addE)day we (F)don't know why we're (G)so far from

(C/addE)One love that's (C/B)all of it
(F)Deep nights and (G)qui(F)et (G/B)days
(C/addE)Long lovers, (C/B)old comforts
(F)Feel like some (G)ball (F)and (G/B)chain (C)(C/B)(F)(G)

(G7)(C/addE)(C/B)(G7)(F)(G/B)

And if (x22200)I want you and you want me
(x03003)We'll call it (x02000)love though it (G/B)might not be
(x22200)Hearts on fire, (x33300)souls in line
(x03003)Oh just to (x02000)know that
(G/B)Just to (F)feel that (G/B)one more (F)time (G/B)(20305x)

Seems impossible to (C)know (C/B)
What is real and what is (F)just some restless (G)thing
And our hearts learn (C)slow (C/B)
All the miseries (F)bad choices (G)bring (F)(G/B)
So is it (C/addE)wise or (F)lazy (G/B)
Holding (C/addE)tight to what you've (F)known (G/B)
And is it (C/addE)brave or (F)crazy searching (G)for some

(C/addE)One love that's (C/B)all of it
(F)Deep nights and (G)qui(F)et (G/B)days
(C/addE)Long lovers, (C/B)old comforts
(F)Feel like some (G)ball (F)and (G/B)chain

(C/addE)One love that's (C/B)all of it
(F)Deep nights and (G)qui(F)et (G/B)days
(C/addE)Long lovers, (C/B)old comforts
(F)Feel like some (G)ball (F)and (G/B)chain

(C/addE)(C/B)(F)(G)-(F)-(G/B)
(C/addE)(C/B)(F)(G)-(F)-(G/B)
(C/addE)(C/B)(F)(G)-(F)-(G/B) . . . (G7)

PARADISE IN TROUBLED WATERS

Intro: (C)(F)(G) . . . (F)(C) . . . (F)(G)

(F)Winter's voice had (G)barely spoken
(Em)Everyone was (F)bummed and broken
Hangin' on to (G)threads the way we (C)do (F)(G)
(F)Shielding eyes from (G)TV screens
With (Em)African starv(F)ation scenes
And photographs in (G)magazines
Of (F)things that (G)can't seem (C)true (F)(G)

Oh(F)Para(C)dise in troubled waters
(F)Situation (G)grim
And (F)we the (C)reckless sons and daughters
(F)Spread the luck so (G)thin
Oh the (C)gross results and chain reaction
(F)Too late under(G)stood
(F)Leave us in embar(G)rassed silence
(F)Wishing that we (G)could
Make the (C)difference, see the light
Carry the (F)flag, lead the (G)fight
Save the (C)whales, save the seals
Save the (F)trees and birds and (G)fields
And save each (F)ot(C)her (F)(G) . . . (C)(F)(G)

So we (F)read the news with (G)helpless eyes
And (Em)look for ways to (F)compromise
But mostly we just (G)do the best we (C)can (F)(G)
Is it (F)just a part of (G)what we are
To (Em)want too much and (F)go too far
And contemplate with (G)no regard
What (F)we don't (G)under(C)stand (F)(G)

Oh (F)Para(C)dise in troubled waters
(F)Situation (G)grim
And (F)we the (C)reckless sons and daughters
(F)Spread the luck so (G)thin
Oh the (C)gross results and chain reaction
(F)Too late under(G)stood
(F)Leave us in embar(G)rassed silence
(F)Wishing that we (G)could
Make the (C)difference, see the light
Carry the (F)flag, lead the (G)fight
Save the (C)whales, save the seals
Save the (F)trees and birds and (G)fields
And save each (F)ot(C)her (F)(G)

Oh . . . (F)Para(C)dise in troubled waters . . .

QUARTER MOON

Capo II

The (Em)(D/F#)(G)(C) sequence is a bass-line walk-up. The chords are pretty standard, but make sure to pluck the notes in bold to give the sequence its distinctive sound.

C: x3202x

(G)(C)(G)(D)

To this (G)day she takes it (C)hard
And they buried their old (G)dog in (D)their (G)backyard (C)(G)(D)

(G)(C)(G)(D)

She (C)brings me plants and (G)flowers all the (D)time
And we (C)dig the holes to(G)gether
She (Em)has to (D/F#)help with (G)mine(C)

Oh my (G)God, her eyes can (C)shine
She brings me plants and (G)flowers (D)all the (G)time (C)(G)(D)

(C)Waiting for the (G)sunset
From an (Em)old and (D/F#)distant (G)dawn(C)
Selling off the (D)land except the (G)part they're living (C)on
And they speak about their (G)lives as (D)almost (G)gone (C)(G)(D)

And they (C)seem to know each (G)other very (D)well
They (C)speak across the (G)garden
But (Em)not a (D/F#)soul could (G)tell(C)

RIGHT WAY TO DO THE WRONG THING

Dsus2: x00230
Bm: x24430
Bm/A: x04430

Intro: (A)(Asus2)(A)(Asus2)

Somehow the (A)fair-haired boy has lost his (Dsus2)place
Stepped from the (Bm)golden light, fallen from (E)grace
Scattered (A)promises like broken (Dsus2)glass
Turned his (Bm)heart away from all he (E)has

And you (Dsus2)can't believe and you (E)can't explain
How a (A)heart can beat and the (Dsus2)world can change
And it's (Bm)left you wonder(E)ing
If there's a (Dsus2)right way to (E)do the wrong (A)thing

New love's a (A)warm surprise to a sleeping (Dsus2)heart
We tell our(Bm)selves the old was wanting from the (E)start
Hot tears in (A)children's eyes, for the nights he (Dsus2)calls
Photos of (Bm)in-law aunts down off the (E)walls

And you (Dsus2)can't believe and you (E)can't explain
How a (A)heart can beat and the (Dsus2)world can change
And it's (Bm)left you wonder(E)ing
If there's a (Dsus2)right way to (E)do the wrong (A)thing

(Bm)Running now, he (Dsus2)can't come clean
And (A)she can't under(E)stand what's changing
(Bm)This charade leaves (Dsus2)her unknowing
(A)Everyday these (E)cracks keep growing (Dsus2)deep(E)er

Church scenes and (A)blue bouquets, trailing (Dsus2)gowns
Don't fore(Bm)see the ways the world can wear us (E)down
We swear for(A)ever, with a sentimental (Dsus2)heart
What God has joined to(Bm)gether, now mostly falls a(E)part

And you (Dsus2)can't believe and you (E)can't explain
How a (A)heart can beat and the (Dsus2)world can change
And it's (Bm)left you wonder(E)ing
If there's a (Dsus2)right way to (E)do the wrong (A)thing
It's (Bm)left you wonder(E)ing

Capo I

D: x00232
Csus2: x30033
G/B: x20033
D/F#: 20023x
Esus/Ab: 42220x
D/C#: x40232

The only part of the song that's even remotely tricky is the little five-note signature riff off of the A7 chords I've indicated with an asterisk. You'll start with the standard A7 chord, which is formed x02020. But then you'll play a little run that will highlight the notes as I've indicated them here in bold:

X0202x
x0203x (Don't actually pluck that 3rd fret on the 2nd string . . . hammer it instead)
x020x0
x0200x
x0202x

It's actually very simple . . . just play along with the CD and you'll be able to handle it in no time.

Intro: (D)(Csus2)(G/B)(A7*) . . . (D)(Csus2)(G/B)(A7*)

In the (D)year of the yellow (Csus2)cab
(G/B)Shadow of the great world (A7*)war
The (D)third kid grandmom (Csus2)had
(G/B)Came into this (A7)world
On a (G)rolling farm in (A)Maryland
When (D)Wilson (D/C#)was the (G)president
As (Em)summer (D/F#)blew her (G)goodbye (Esus/Ab)through the (A)trees

A (D)child of changing (Csus2)times
Growing (G/B)up between the (A7*)wars
(D)Fords rolled off the (Csus2)lines
And (G/B)bars all closed their (A7)doors
And (G)I imagine (A)you back then
With (D)snap brim (D/C#)hat and (G)farmer's tan
Where (Em)horses (D/F#)drew their (G)wagons (Esus/Ab)through the (A)fields

Now the (G)fields are all four (A)lanes
And the (D)moon's not just a (G)name
Are you (Em)more a(D/F#)mazed at (G)how things change
Or (Bm)how they (A)stay the (D)same
And do you (G)sit here on this (A)porch and wonder
(D)How the (D/C#)time flies (G)by
Or (Em)does it seem to (D/F#)barely creep a(G)long
With (Em)seventy (D/F#)five (G)Septembers (A)come and (D)gone (Csus2)(G/B)(A7*)

(D)(Csus2)(G/B)(A7*)

Were the (D)fields all gold and (Csus2)fawn
Was the (G/B)spring house dark and (A7*)cool
Did the (D)rooster crow at (Csus2)dawn
When they (G/B)got you up for (A7)school
And (G)would you tell me (A)once again
The (D)tales of (D/C#)granddad's (G)hired men
And (Em)how they (D/F#)drove the (G)old dirt (Esus/Ab)road to (A)town

SO FAR TO FALL

Intro: (G)(C) . . . (G)(C)(D) . . . (G)(C)(G)(D)

(G)I guess (D)I can't (G)stop you (Gsus4)(G)
No, (C)I guess (Em)you'll just (D)leave (Dsus4)(D)
(C)It's like I woke and found
(D)You walking on (Em)sacred ground
(C)Bringing a (Em)great dread down on (D)me (Dsus4)(D)

And (G)I know (D)we've had (G)hard times (Gsus4)(G)
But (C)I thought (Em)we'd still (D)try (Dsus4)(D)
(C)Now didn't we both intend
(D)To see this through (Em)thick and thin
(C)It wasn't just (Em)sink or swim this (D)time

Well this ain't the (C)love you swore to (G)me
And this ain't the (D)life it's supposed to (G)be
And I don't know just how to hold (C)on now
And it's so far (G)to fall
From the warm light (D)in your eyes
To nothin' at (G)all (C)

Guess I'll (G)drop by (D)and see my (G)old friends (Gsus4)(G)
Maybe (C)go off (Em)on my (D)own (Dsus4)(D)
(C)You speak from a heart so cold
(D)To tell me your (Em)love's grown old
(C)And just not e(Em)nough to hold you (D)down

Well this ain't the (C)love you swore to (G)me

SUMMER FLY

Capo III

I don't think Cheryl plays this one in concert anymore, but the only time I saw her perform it, back in February of '87 (yes, '87), she did it in an open Gm tuning. However, this transcription is in standard tuning, and is pretty true to the version on Half a Book.

Intro: (Em)(C)(B7)(Em)

In an(Em)other younger day
I could dream the time away
In the (C)universe inside my room
And the (B7)world was really mine from June to (Em)September
And if it wasn't really so
I was lucky not to know
And I was (C)lucky not to wonder why
'Cause a (B7)pure and golden high is all that I re(Em)member

A summer fly was buzzin'
Every (C)night when I was young
In the (B7)gentle world my childlike senses (Em)knew
And the world was just my cousin
And the (C)wind was just the tongue
In the (B7)voice my lonely moments listened (Em)to

(Em)(C)(B7)(Em)

And I (Em)look at me today
All the dreams have gone away
And I'm (C)where I never thought I'd be
Seein' (B7)things I never thought I'd see happenin' (Em)to me
And I lay awake at night
Till the darkness goes to light
Hearin' (C)voices callin' out my name
Dronin' (B7)over and again the same message (Em)to me

Cryin' who's your partner
Who's your darlin'
(C)Who's your baby now
(B7)Who wakes up at night to pull you (Em)in
It don't matter, you just make her (C)lonely anyhow
(B7)Don't know why you even try to (Em)win

Cryin' who's your partner
Who's your darlin'
(C)Who's your baby now
(B7)Who wakes up at night to pull you (Em)in
It don't matter, you just make her (C)lonely anyhow
(B7)Don't know why you even try to (Em)win

SYLVIA HOTEL

Capo IV

Generally, you don't pick the high E string in this song, instead using the 3rd fret on the B string as your highest note. Actually, just plant your ring finger there and leave it there all the way until the bridge (the "Durango" section).

Maybe he (Em7)only speaks Fran(C)cais

(G)You must be safe in (D/F#)bed
(Em7)Down in your cowboy (C)home
I (G)don't wonder why you (D/F#)left
I wonder (Em7)why you stayed so (C)long

Why (G)not, o(C)kay

WHEEL ON A WIRE

Here's a ridiculously old song of Cheryl's, which I don't think she has performed in years. But I heard her do it the first time I ever saw her, 2/21/87, and this transcription is from a tape of that show. It's taken this long to work out the transcription because, until recently, I was unable to decipher most of the lyrics. By the way, the G/F# chord is really just a walkdown from the G to the Em.

Capo III

It (G)don't much seem to matter (G/F#)(Em)how the evenings go
For that (Am)mornin' (Am/G)sun comes (Bm)slowly a(Am)long (Am/G)(D/F#)
The (G)day brings back the distance (G/F#)and (Em)wipes the mood away
Like all the (Am)stars who (Am/G)couldn't (Bm)stay after the (Am)dawn (Am/G)(D/F#)

And I'm like a (G)wheel on a wire
(G/F#)(Em)Burnin' along the track
Travelin' (Am)too fast for (Am/G)lookin' (D/F#)back
And I can't (G)see (G/F#)(Em)(Am)(Am/G)(D/F#)

(G)One more cup of coffee (G/F#)in a (Em)ragged afternoon
Seeing the (Am)sun be(Am/G)neath the (Bm)moon I drift a(Am)way (Am/G)(D/F#)
And (G)out among the shadows, (G/F#)the (Em)passion comes to rise
In all the (Am)pairs of (Am/G)hungry (Bm)eyes whose glances (Am)stray (Am/G)(D/F#)

And I'm like a (G)wheel on a wire
(G/F#)(Em)Burnin' along the track
Travelin' (Am)too fast for (Am/G)lookin' (D/F#)back
And I can't (G)see
(D/F#)I feel like a (G)wheel on a wire
(G/F#)(Em)Speedin' beyond control
Bated and (Am)breathless I (Am/G#)feel my (D/F#)soul

Capo I

Intro: (G)(D/F#)(G)

And the (C)air's so (G)clear you can (D/F#)almost (Em)hear
The (C)grapes (C/B)grow (Am)on (Am/G)the (D/F#)vine

The (G)nights are sharp with (D/F#)star(G)light
And the (C)days are (G)cool and (D/F#)clean
(C)And in the (G)blue sky (D/F#)over(G)head
(C)The northern (G)geese fly (D/F#)south in(G)stead

When (C)fall comes (G)to New (D/F#)Eng(G)land

(G)(D/F#)(G)

When (G)fall comes to New (D/F#)Eng(G)land
And the (C)wind blows (G)off the (D/F#)sea
(C)Swallows (G)fly in a (D/F#)perfect (Em)sky
And the (C)world (C/B)was (Am)meant (Am/G)to (D/F#)be

When the (G)acorns line the (D/F#)walk(G)ways
Then (C)winter (G)can't be (D/F#)far
(C)From yellow (G)leaves a (D/F#)blue jay (G)calls
(C)Grandmothers (G)walk out (D/F#)in their (G)shawls
(C)And chipmunks (G)run the (D/F#)old stone (Em)walls
When (C)fall comes (G)to New (D/F#)Eng(G)land

(G)(D/F#)(G)

The (C)frost is (C/B)on the (Am)pumpkin
The (Em)squash is (D/F#)off the (G)vine
And (C)winter (C/B)warnings (Am)race across the (D/F#)sky
The (C)squirrels are (C/B)on to (Am)something
And they're (Em)working (D/F#)over(G)time
The (C)foxes (C/B)blink and (Am)stare and so do (D/F#)I

'Cause when (G)fall comes to New (D/F#)Eng(G)land
Oh (C)I can't (G)turn a(D/F#)way
(C)From fading (G)light on (D/F#)flying (G)wings
(C)And late good(G)byes a (D/F#)robin (G)sings
(C)And then an(G)other (D/F#)thousand (Em)things
When (C)fall comes (G)to New (D/F#)Eng(Em)land
When (C)fall comes (G)to New (D/F#)Eng(G)land
